Travel Insurance for cruise holidays from Travel Guard®

Cruise travel insurance plans are designed to cover you on your water-bound vacations whether you’re travelling across the sea or on a river cruise. From the Bahamas to Barcelona, there is a Travel Guard plan to cover your cruise vacation no matter how long or short it may be.

When considering travel insurance plan options, it’s important to remember that your provincial health care plan may not cover you while travelling out of the country, including travel on international waters or visits to a doctor or hospital when in port. Having a cruise travel insurance plan with medical expense coverage and any necessary medical transport coverage is invaluable if you find yourself with an unexpected illness or injury.

Or, if unforeseeable bad weather interrupts your trip, Travel Guard has coverage options to help protect you.

Cruise Travel Insurance

What is a cruise travel insurance plan?

Cruise travel insurance plans provide travellers with coverage for their cruise vacation from start to finish. This includes much more than just your cruise –flights and your hotel stay before your cruise departs (or your post cruise accommodation) can be covered with your Travel Guard travel insurance plan.

What is the difference between travel insurance and cruise insurance?

The cruise line you book through may offer cruise insurance that you can only purchase during booking for coverage for your cruise. However, cruisers may be better served by purchasing travel insurance to cover the entirety of their trip outside of their Canadian home province rather than solely for the cruise booking and the time spent on the ship. It’s important to note that coverage purchased directly from the cruise line for your trip may not include protection for your travel arrangements before your cruise departs.

What does a cruise travel insurance plan cover?

Travel Guard offers several travel insurance plans for your cruise vacation. Look for a plan that has the coverage and benefits you need. Popular plan features include:

  • Medical expense coverage
  • Emergency travel assistance – specialized representatives are available day or night for unexpected travel issues, no matter how far the next port is
  • Baggage coverage
  • Trip cancellation coverage
  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Cruise Interruption
  • Cruise and Tour Protector

Can I cruise without travel insurance?

While cruise travel insurance can help in a variety of circumstances, it is not typically a requirement for setting sail, though you will want to check with your cruise line regarding entry requirements for the countries you’ll dock in.

Does trip cancellation insurance cover cruises?

Yes, you can insure your pre-paid, non-refundable cruise fare with a travel insurance policy that includes trip cancellation coverage.  And, if the reason for your trip cancellation is covered in your policy of insurance, you may be eligible for trip cancellation coverage under your policy.

Will a cruise travel insurance plan cover my flights?

Depending on the plan you select, Travel Guard can help to ensure your entire trip is covered. This means you can purchase coverage for all of your pre-paid and non-refundable expenses associated with your trip, such as your prepaid, non-refundable airfare and hotel accommodation. Before filing a claim, view your policy to make sure the reason you’re filing is a covered reason.

What is the best travel insurance plan for seniors going on a cruise?

We offer travel insurance products that include coverage for senior travellers such as emergency medical coverage, trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage and more. In addition, all of Travel Guard’s travel insurance plans come with access to our specially trained representatives for 24/7 emergency medical and emergency travel assistance. Our representatives can help with anything from rebooking missed flights to finding quality medical care while you’re travelling – so you can focus on making the most of your trip. Travellers should read and understand the terms and conditions of the policy to ensure that the policy meets their needs as the policy may not provide coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

What is a covered reason to cancel a cruise?

An example of a covered reason to cancel your cruise might be the death of an immediate family member, a delay of your schedule caused by bad weather (causing you to miss at least 30% of your scheduled trip), or an unexpected sickness preventing you from travelling. Be sure to check your insurance policy to know what coverages you have.

How much do you lose if you cancel a cruise?

The financial loss of a cancelled trip will depend on the total cost of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip arrangements. If your travel arrangements are 100% non-refundable, you will lose the total amount you paid for such things as the cost of your cruise, your pre-booked shore excursions and your airline tickets.  It can be crucial to purchase a travel insurance plan to protect against unforeseen circumstances that may cause you to cancel your trip. In other words, having travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage may provide you with reimbursement of the prepaid, non-refundable trip arrangements. However, travel insurance does not provide coverage for all circumstances. Be sure to review your policy of insurance to understand what risks are covered for trip cancellation.
